We went on a mission to find the best tapas bars in Alicante central and this led us to an unexpected discovery that we’ve named the “Horse’s Head” Tapas Crawl. The trail, which we stumbled upon by accident, forms the shape of a horse’s head on Google Maps, with Plaza Luceros representing the horse’s eye. What began as a casual night out with friends turned into a legendary experience, combining some of the city’s finest gastronomic delights with a walk through parts of Alicante you might not usually explore.

D’Tablas is what your mum might call, “Cheap and Cheerful!” The food may not be award-winning, but the fun service style attracts the crowds. Tapas and small pinchos are served on wooden blocks, the beer is cheap, the atmosphere is loud and fun, verging on the chaotic and the experience is quintessentially Spanish. If D’tablas isn’t to your taste, venture across the road to El Portal or Bar Manero Mollá for a much more decadent experience.

2. Taberna Alioli

Next, in complete contrast to D’tablas, we head to Taberna Alioli, situated beside the Concatedral de San Nicolás for some classic high-quality tapas. Located near the Central Market, this inviting urban spot offers a range of creative modern tapas with a Mexican twist, from Shiitake and Kimchi croquetas to delicious Falafel and vegan Quesadillas. The lively crowd and unpretentious décor turn every visit into a genuine Alicante experience. This bar is in the Mercado barrio, well known for its quirky independent shops and bars. It’s worth bearing in mind before setting off that Jacapaca is a cash-only bar.
Alternative option: if Jacapaca is too busy or you fancy something a little more traditional, then Los Manos is only 100 yards away. A short walk towards Plaza Nueva from Plaza Dr Balmis and we arrive at our next destination. Pinetell is a small bar with a big voice. Located on Calle Navas, this cosy tapas bar is full of character and warmth. The owners are known for their incredible hospitality and excellent service, which is particularly welcoming if you speak Spanish or make an effort to do so. The star attraction at Pinetell is their tortilla de patatas, reputed to be the best in Alicante.
