El cookie is run by a lovely American couple for whom nothing is too much trouble. El cookie even hosts weekly events such as board game nights and baking classes. (Address: Calle Poeta Quintana 27). Check out their website for more information.
- Catch the train (or bus) to Elche City centre: If you’re on holiday in Alicante and fancy a trip out of the city, visit nearby Elche (Elx in Valencian), a city of big surprises. Kids will love exploring the oasis of palm trees, old fortresses, and Arab baths turned convents. Walking through Elche’s old town, they’ll see diverse architectural styles and enjoy the lively Plaza de la Glorieta, home to the famous replica of the Lady of Elche. A short walk to Plaza de la Mercé offers a cosy family atmosphere with lovely terraces for snacks.
- Take Photos in Mushroom Street: This surreal street (it’s proper name is Calle San Francisco), that feels a bit like like a scene from a children’s movie has become a real attraction in the past few years. Everyone wants to come and take photos of Mushroom street. Once it was a nondescript and neglected street. So the mayor at the time decided to do something about it and in a bold move, the street was given this crazy makeover. Ten-foot-high mushroom sculptures emerged, rising from newly painted green and yellow cobblestones. Nowadays the street is one of the most famous scenes in photographs of Alicante and hardly anybody uses the real name of the street anymore.
- Visit the old Roman City of Lucentum: The Romans were very early settlers in Alicante. They called it Lucentum, the city of light. The city of Lucentum is located on the Tossal De Manises, which is in Albufereta, a few stops on the tram from Alicante. At the time of the cities existence, it would have been higher than all the ground surrounding but now it’s hard to been find it in amongst the high rise buildings all around it. The site is fascinating, especially if your kids have studied Roman history at school yet. Don’t expect a huge amount of interactive hands on displays for the kids but it’s a nice diversion for a morning. Tours are available but you need to phone in advance. The cost is about 3 euros entrance fee and free for children under 8 years old. (Website)
- Visit Gran Via shopping centre: For teens that can’t stop shopping, you have the Gran Via shopping centre. It’s not a huge shopping centre but a welcome diversion on a sweltering hot day. Here you can find several well known brands, including Lefties, a large Primark store, primor and Bershka plus loads more. - Have fun on the beach: with so many blue flag beaches to choose from, why would you not go to the beach while you are in Alicante. The three best beaches in Alicante are Postiguet, Albuefereta and San Jun Playa. Each one has a different vibe: Postiguet is always busy and very close to the city centre (it’s our favourite). Albuefereta is prettier and smaller and San juan is a huge 7 km of wide golden sand. You can find really nice chiringuitos at all three for drinks and snacks. There are kids climbing frames and volleyball courts available on all three also.
- Go Kart Racing: Go-karting is an exhilarating activity that captivates kids for several reasons. First and foremost, it boosts their hand-eye coordination. The physical activity involved also contributes to their physical fitness, strengthening core muscles, improving balance, and increasing coordination. Whether racing with friends or family, kids learn communication, sportsmanship, and cooperation. Additionally, facing setbacks like losing a race or crashing teaches them resilience—an essential life skill. In Alicante you can find Electric Karting in San Vicente which is accesible by Tram or Petrol Driven Karting, a short drive or a taxi ride.
- The Museum of water: The Museo de Aguas de Alicante (Alicante Water Museum) is located in the Old Town of Alicante. Although the museum is not huge and a visit won’t last more than an hour typically, it’s a good one to combine with a walk around the old town. The signs and information in the museum are mostly in Spanish but it’s visual enough to get a good idea if you’re not comfortable with Spanish. The reason that this museum is one of the great things to do in Alicante with kids is the excavated caves that were used to hold water many years ago. They do feel like a grotto, it s great experience for kids and adults alike. There’s also some great views from the old town, so it’s well worth putting a little time aside for this free activity.
- Chocolate con churros at Valor or Visit the Museum of Chocolate: Chocolate con churros is a beloved combination in Spain, and the most popular cafe in Spain to eat this sweet treat is Valor. In Alicante you can find a Valor cafe on the Explanada. When you walk inside the cafe you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time. A few miles up the coast, you can find the Valor Museum of Chocolate in Villajoyosa. If you’re arriving by tram the nearest stop Crueta is only 5 minutes walk from the museum. The museum is free to enter but you do need to book your ticket in advance through the website. This is a nice one to combine with a trip to the very pretty beach at Villajoyosa. We did the museum in the morning and then the beach in the afternoon after lunch.
- Parque Lo Morant: Parque Lo Morant is like a little green haven tucked away in the north of the city. Named after the architect José Morant, it’s become our go-to spot for family picnics as an alternative to beach picnics. There are fitness areas, a small lake, benches under shady trees where we can chat, read, or just watch the world go by. So, if you’re looking for an alternative location for a lovely walk and a picnic, grab your blanket, soak up the sun, and had to Parque Lo Morant—we’re all part of its story.
- Family Park: Family park is a small park for families with younger children. There are two Family Parks in Aliante, one is in San Vicente (Tram line 2) and the other is in Albufereta (Tram lines 1,3,4 and 5). On the website you’ll see the Albufereta park advertised as being in San Juan but, in reality, its closer to Albufereta. Both parks have plenty for the little ones and both are free to enter. Out tip would be to buy the wrist band so that the kids have full access to everything as many times as they want. There is a cafe for parents to relax while the kids play. https://familyparkalicante.com
- Rio Safari Park Elche: We haven’t ever visited this park yet but we have friends who say they enjoyed it. Located in Elche, the park offers a unique wildlife experience perfect for families and nature enthusiasts. The park features a diverse range of animals, including lions, giraffes, elephants, and exotic birds, all housed in spacious enclosures designed to mimic their natural habitats.
- Rio Safari Park Elche: Contd…There is also a Splash park that ‘s open in summer. There are also opportunities for up-close encounters with some of the animals, making it an exciting and educational visit for all ages. Location: Elche-Santa Pola Highway (CV 865), 9 km from Elche and 4 km from Santa Pola. The journey takes about 25 minutes by car, making it a convenient day trip from the city. You can get the Santa Pola bus from the bus station. https://riosafari.com/
- Visit museum of the Plaza de toros with audio guide: The Alicante Plaza de Toros, a historic bullring visited by notable figures like Yul Brynner and Ernest Hemingway, now hosts more pop concerts than bullfights. Its museum offers fascinating exhibits that kids might enjoy, showcasing the rich history of bullfighting. Visitors can enhance their experience with an audio guide or book a guided tour to learn more about this cultural landmark. The lasts about 1 hour and …dont worry, you dont have to see any bullfighting if you do the tour! if you are visiting at Christmas time, this is where you can normally find the ice skating too.
- Salinas de Torrevieja: Visiting the largest Sea Salt production facililty in Europe, the Salinas de Torrevieja on the tourist train from Torrevieja is a interesting experience. The striking pink waters of the salt lakes, a unique natural phenomenon are quite enchanting. The journey itself is a delight, offering scenic views and an educational insight into the region’s salt production. Kids might not be so interested in the audio but they will be mesmerized by the mountains of salt, the vivid colors and, hopefully, the sighting of flamingos, making it a memorable family outing. Getting to Torrevieja is a bit of a hike from Alicante so it’s best to plan this trip in combination with something else in the area.
