February Half Term in Alicante

Whats on in Alicante 23 February to 1 March 2026

A Week in Alicante

This week felt like one of those gentle reminders of why we moved here in the first place. We met up with old friends we hadn’t seen for years and ended up at The Little Duke for a drink — one of those relaxed evenings that unfold without much effort. The city has been noticeably busier too; half term in England has clearly brought plenty of people south in search of warmth and light.

By the time you’re reading this, the Alicante Half Marathon will either be underway or just finished. It takes place on Sunday 22 February, and we’ll be out cheering on our neighbour, John John, who’s running it. There’s something about race day mornings here — the mix of nerves, sunshine and closed roads — that gives the city a different sort of energy.

Tuesday delivered a properly glorious day. The sky was sharp and bright, and the beach filled up early. I had my first swim of the year — freezing, yes, but strangely invigorating. By Wednesday the mood had shifted to carnival mischief for the Entierro de la Sardina. The satire was very much alive; this year the sardine carried a rather recognisable political figure on top, which caused plenty of laughter before the traditional flames brought the evening to its smoky conclusion.

There was music as well. A lovely concert at ADDA from the Conservatorio Superior de Música Óscar Esplá — young musicians playing with real commitment. It was one of those evenings that reminds you how much local talent there is here. And after nearly five years in Alicante without one, we’ve finally leased a car. It feels oddly liberating. A quick run up to Benidorm for supplies from the English supermarket, and suddenly the province feels that bit more open.

🏰 Always Worth Doing

Not everything needs a ticket.

  • Walk up to Castillo de Santa Bárbara (or take the lift if you’re feeling sensible).
  • Visit MACA in the Old Town for contemporary art.
  • Explore MARQ if you enjoy archaeology and well-curated exhibitions.
  • Wander through Mercado Central and stop nearby for a coffee and something small to eat.

Sometimes the simplest plans are the best ones.
