For those seeking authentic Mexican food in Alicante, Aventurera “El Rincón Perdido” stands out as an exceptional find. Nestled in the vibrant Mercado Central, this cantina adds a huge splash of colour to the corner of the fish market where it sits. Aptly named “The Forgotten Corner,” the cantina lives up to its moniker by providing an experience so captivating that one might easily lose track of time amidst its vibrant décor and delectable offerings.
A Vibrant Introduction to Aventurera “El Rincón Perdido”
Upon entering Aventurera, the sensory experience is immediate. The cantina’s décor, adorned with vivid Mexican art and tributes to the iconic Frida Kahlo, creates a lively and inviting atmosphere. The music – lively Mexican ranchers, enhances the feeling of stepping into a bustling cantina in Mexico City. It’s a place where every detail contributes to a rich, immersive experience that transports you straight to Mexico.
The cantina is helmed by Fernando, an Alicante native with a profound appreciation for local wines, and his wife Veronica, hailing from the heart of Mexico, Mexico City Together, they’ve crafted a small haven for lovers of authentic Mexican cuisine in Alicante. Veronica’s passion for cooking is deeply influenced by her family heritage; her mother, an exceptional cook herself, passed down a love for food that Veronica continues to honour. This culinary passion, originally inherited from her grandmother, is palpable in the flavour of every dish.
A Feast of Mexican food in ALicante ( Moles and Mexican Classics)
Our visit commenced with a quintessential Mexican experience: a cold beer paired with a rich tapa tapa of Cochinita Pibil (a rich smoky pulled-pork stew) on a taco. The cold beer, served at the perfect temperature, complemented the tapa perfectly, whetting the appetite for more to follow. The menu, available in both Spanish and English, offers a tantalising array of Mexican classics.
A standout feature of Aventurera is its selection of 4 Mexican moles; Mole Rojo, Mole de Novia, Mole de Nuez, and Mole Verde. Each mole presents a unique flavour profile:
- Mole Rojo: Rich and spicy, made with dried chiles, tomatoes, and a blend of spices, resulting in a deep, red sauce with a robust flavour.
- Mole de Novia: Known for its complex taste, this mole combines chocolate and almonds, offering a sweet and savoury profile ideal for special occasions.
- Mole de Nuez: Incorporates nuts to deliver a slightly sweet, nutty flavour, adding a distinct texture and richness.
- Mole Verde: Made with green ingredients such as tomatillos, green chiles, and cilantro, this mole provides a fresh, tangy contrast to the others.
We opted for the classic Mole Rojo: It didn’t disappoint, the flavour was dark and complex. Served with soft tacos and a garnish of coriander, pineapple and onion.
Next up…Tacos al Pastor, enhanced with a spicy habanera pulp on the side provided by Fernando. The heat was exhilarating, adding an exciting kick to the already flavourful tacos. Veronica’s culinary skills are matched by her dedication to authentic Mexican cuisine, a dedication that has quickly earned Aventurera a place in the hearts of both locals and visitors seeking the best Mexican food in Alicante.
The Michelada, the Warmth and the Great Local Alicante Characters
Of course we had to drink the famous “Michelada” (how could we not!!). Michelada is a notorious Mexican drink made with beer, Worcestershire sauce, chilli sauce, and lime, served in a glass with a salted rim. This concoction, popular all over Mexico, offers a tangy and spicy refreshment, providing a distinctive taste that is both invigorating and unique. Apparently, it’s the perfect cure for “la Cruda”, which is the Mexican name for a hangover (or in Spain it’s a resaca). If you’re on the hunt for authentic Mexican food in Alicante, pairing it with a Michelada is a must!
The cantina’s popularity is clear from the endless flow of hungry patrons. Among them was Luis, a local bar owner with roots in Paraguay, who’s practically a regular at Aventurera. His own spot, “The Old Bar,” tucked away in the old town en route to Plaza de Toros, is famous for its quirky charm and some of the best tapas you’ll find this side of Alicante. Luis, who made Alicante his home 19 years ago, and his wife—an intriguing mix of Dutch and Spanish heritage—have become well-known fixtures in the local bar scene. And, of course, Luis always knows where to find the best Mexican food in Alicante when the craving strikes.
We also had the pleasure of meeting local legend and all round good bloke Boris, a renowned local figure hailed by many as the “best camarero in Alicante.” Boris, characterised by his distinctive moustache and cap, is as friendly as he is famous, adding to the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the cantina. He is so well known locally that he has been immortalised in a graffiti style mural on the side of the Lonja Car park at the back of the market as you can see in the photograph.
As our visit drew to a close, Fernando suggested we try La Paloma, another celebrated Mexican drink, but our better judgement took over, and we’re saving that one for next time. The cantina’s dynamic atmosphere and the quality of its offerings make it clear that Aventurera is definitely a place to return to.
Aventurera “El Rincón Perdido” is a remarkable addition to Alicante’s culinary landscape, offering an authentic and vibrant taste of Mexican food in Alicante. With its rich flavours, warm hospitality, and immersive atmosphere, it’s a must-visit for anyone seeking to experience the true essence of Mexican cuisine and real hospitality in Alicante.
