Whats on in Alicante this week 12-19 June 2026 is dominated by the arrival of Hogueras, the city’s biggest festival. The barracas are going up, the smell of gunpowder is beginning to drift through the streets, and Alicante is preparing for the most exciting time of the year. Add in World Cup football, classical music, comedy, rooftop DJs and medieval tournaments, and there is plenty happening before the main Hogueras celebrations burst into life.
If you are wondering what all the fuss is about, Hogueras de San Juan was officially declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest in 1983. If you’re new to Alicante, have a look at our guide explaining exactly what it is and why the city becomes completely obsessed with it every June.
Whats on in Alicante this week 12-19 June 2026: Hogueras Takes Over The City
This is the week when Alicante changes gear.
You’ll start hearing the dulzaina (or dolçaina in Valencian), the traditional reed instrument that accompanies many of the parades and celebrations. You’ll see workers building barracas across the city and you’ll notice more people gathering in the streets than usual.
You will also see both Hogueras and Fogueres written everywhere. They are exactly the same festival. Hogueras is the Spanish (Castellano) name and Fogueres is the Valencian name.
The official festival website is:
Website: https://www.hogueras.es/
Many visitors don’t realise that Alicante has more than 90 bonfire commissions. Each one operates almost like a social club, spending the entire year fundraising to create their monument, organise their events and ensure that their corner of Alicante is the place to be during the festival.

Saturday 13 June: Mascletà at Agatángelo Soler (Near Gran Via Shopping Centre)
Saturday 13 June – 14:00
One of the highlights of Whats on in Alicante this week 12-19 June 2026 is the pre-Hogueras mascletà at Avenida Agatángelo Soler, close to the Gran Vía Shopping Centre.
For visitors, this is actually one of the easiest mascletàs to attend. The huge roundabout provides plenty of viewing space and afterwards you can head into the shopping centre for lunch, a drink or a bit of retail therapy.
The mascletà starts promptly at 14:00 and lasts only 5 -7 minutes (but it is a loud 5-7 minutes!) so don’t arrive at five past expecting to ease yourself into position. best to get there early, grab a beer and a tapa and enjoy the build up. The beer and tapas stalls operate by a ticket system. They are very cheap. Tell the person selling the tickets what you want to consume and they’ll sell you the right tick, which you then take to the next stand to exhange for a drink and a tapa.
Bus routes including the L1 and L10 can get you close to the area, although road closures may affect services during the festivities.
Why Alicantinos Love a Mascletà
People often focus on the noise, but for many locals the build-up is every bit as enjoyable as the explosion itself.
Music plays through the square, people meet friends they haven’t seen for months, bars become busier, conversations start with complete strangers and there is a genuine feeling that something special is about to happen.
Personally, there is nothing quite like standing in a crowd up to an hour before a mascletà begins. The anticipation creates such a nice atmosphere.
Once the final explosion has rattled every internal organ in your body, you’ll hear the Alicante Hogueras hymn played over the loud speakers as thousands of people head off for lunch. During Hogueras week you’ll notice restaurants becoming significantly busier than usual, particularly around Plaza Luceros and the city centre.
Does the Mascletà Damage the Luceros Fountain?
One topic that appears every year is whether the mascletàs damage the famous fountain in Plaza Luceros.
Recently Mayor Luis Barcala commissioned studies into the issue and stated that the findings showed the mascletàs were not causing structural damage to the monument.
Whether that debate ever truly disappears remains to be seen, but the mascletàs are staying firmly in Luceros for the foreseeable future.

Wednesday 17 June: Arribada del Foc
Wednesday 17 June – 23:00
If there is one event we’d particularly recommend from Whats on in Alicante this week 12-19 June 2026, it is the Arribada del Foc.
Taking place outside El Corte Inglés on Avenida Federico Soto, close to Alicante train station, this combines music, pyrotechnics and ceremony as the symbolic fire arrives in the city.
The atmosphere is wonderful. It gets extremely crowded, but that’s part of the experience. You’ll find families, visitors and lifelong Alicantinos all squeezed together waiting for the show to begin, even if its late and they all have work or school in the morning.
This event feels like the official starting gun for Hogueras.
The following day sees the return of the daily mascletàs in Plaza Luceros.
Daily Mascletàs Return to Plaza Luceros
From 18 June until 24 June, Plaza Luceros hosts the famous daily mascletà competition at 14:00.
This year’s competition programme includes:
- 18 June – Mediterranean Fireworks company
- 19 June – Pirotecnia Crespo
- 20 June – Pirotecnia Turís
- 21 June – Mediterranean Fireworks
- 22 June – Pibierzo
- 23 June – Hermanos Ferrández
- 24 June – Alto Palancia
Expect enormous crowds and arrive early if you want a good position.
We personally, like to watch all the crowds on the balconies around Luceros holding up their score cards to judge the performance of the various pyrotechnic companies.
Free Bus Route for the Hogueras Monuments
One of the most useful things to do during Hogueras is to explore the monuments scattered across the city.
Many visitors only see the monuments in the centre, but there are dozens spread across Alicante’s neighbourhoods.
The city traditionally operates a free special bus service allowing visitors to tour many of the major monuments. We are awaiting confirmation of the 2026 route details and will update readers as soon as they are released. But you can usually pick up the bus from outside the El Corte Ingles store on the corner near Federico Soto.
You may be surprised by just how many monuments there are once you start exploring beyond the city centre.
Entry of Bands and Hogueras Commissions Parade
Saturday 13 June – 18:30
This is effectively the first big street parade of the week after the Cabalgata del Ninot. Bands, commissions, representatives and participants from the various Hogueras neighbourhoods parade through the city centre.
Route:
- Plaza de los Luceros
- Alfonso X El Sabio
- Rambla de Méndez Núñez
- Calle Altamira
- Plaza del Ayuntamiento
If you’re in the city centre on Saturday evening, keep an ear out for the music. The Entry of Bands and Hogueras Commissions Parade brings together many of the commissions that will soon dominate the city during Hogueras. Expect traditional dress, marching bands, plenty of colour and a chance to see the festival community before the monuments take centre stage.
There aren’t huge daily parades during 12-19 June. The really major parade events come later:
- Flower Offering (21 & 22 June)
- Giants and Big Heads (22 & 23 June)
- International Folklore Parade (23 June)
Friday 12 June: ADDA Simfònica Alicante
Friday 12 June – 20:00
The cultural highlight of Whats on in Alicante this week 12-19 June 2026 takes place at ADDA Alicante (near Plaza de Toros).
La Llegada. El Viaje Existencial features the ADDA Simfònica orchestra together with acclaimed pianist Anna Fedorova.
If you have never visited ADDA, this is one of Alicante’s finest venues and a wonderful way to spend an evening.
Tuesday 16 June: Hogueras Concert at ADDA
Tuesday 16 June – 20:15
XXIX Concierto de Música de Hogueras de Información
Performed by the excellent Banda Sinfónica Municipal de Alicante, together with the Orfeón Cantábile and Pedro Lara Navarrete.
The municipal band consistently produces performances of an exceptionally high standard and this concert has become an important part of the city’s Hogueras calendar.
Exposición del Ninot – Last Chance This Weekend
Until Sunday 14 June
La Lonja del Pescado (Port area, near the marina)
One of the highlights of Whats on in Alicante this week 12-19 June 2026 is the final weekend of the Exposición del Ninot.
Before the Hogueras monuments appear on the streets, each commission submits a ninot (a figure from its monument) to this exhibition. Visitors can admire the creativity, humour and craftsmanship up close before voting for their favourites.
The winning adult and children’s ninots earn the coveted Ninot Indultat title, meaning they escape the flames during La Cremà and are preserved for future generations.
If you’ve never been before, it’s a fascinating preview of what is about to appear across Alicante over the next week. Some are funny, some are political, some are beautifully artistic and a few leave you wondering what on earth the artist was thinking.

The exhibition remains open until Sunday 14 June, making this your last opportunity to see all of the entries together in one place before the city fills with the finished monuments.
Spain and England Begin Their World Cup Campaigns
Football fans have plenty to look forward to.
Spain v Cape Verde
Monday 15 June – 18:00
England v Croatia
Wednesday 17 June – 22:00 Spanish time
Good places to watch include:
- Red Corner Sports Bar (Plaza Nueva)
- Austin’s
- Little Duke
All three are likely to be lively, particularly if Spain get off to a winning start.
Medieval Tournament at Plaza de Toros
12-14 June
The Plaza de Toros hosts Los Cuatro Reinos: El Gran Torneo Medieval.
Expect knights, horses, combat displays, theatrical performances and enough medieval pageantry to make you briefly wonder whether you’ve accidentally travelled back several centuries.
A fun option for families and something completely different from the Hogueras festivities.
Drag Queen Cabaret Show
La Casa delle Follie
A dazzling evening of comedy, music, costume changes and audience participation.
There is a very high probability that even people who arrived saying “we’ll just stay for one drink” will still be there several hours later. 2 shows per day at he weekends, an early and a late one.

Marmarela
For the party crowd (or the mid-life crisis crowd) , Marmarela continues its programme of pool parties, DJs and late-night events beside the marina. If you are interested in nightclubs (or discotecas , as they are called in Spain), this place was voted 50th Top night club in the world.
If your ideal evening involves cocktails, loud music and dancing until considerably later than originally planned, this is the place.
Stand-Up Comedy in English
Sunday 14 June
English-language comedy returns to Alicante with Fredy Beats, combining stand-up, music and beatboxing.
For international residents and visitors, it is always good to see more English-language entertainment appearing in the city.
Looking Ahead: The Big Week
As exciting as this week’s events are, they are really just the warm-up act.
The Palmera will launch from Santa Bárbara Castle at midnight on 24 June, signalling the start of La Cremà, when the monuments are burned across the city.
Before that, Alicante will enjoy daily mascletàs, parades, music, fireworks and celebrations that transform almost every neighbourhood.
So if you’re looking for Whats on in Alicante this week 12-19 June 2026, this is the perfect opportunity to experience Alicante as locals know and love it: noisy, sociable, slightly chaotic and completely unforgettable.
If you’re only in Alicante for this weekend and can’t stay for the main monuments, the Exposición del Ninot at La Lonja is arguably the best way to experience the artistic side of Hogueras before the festival fully begins.
